Use the space allotted

The full space currently allowed by Facebook is 180 pixels wide by 540 pixels deep. Start by setting up a new canvas in Photoshop or other image editing program to this size.

My friend Amanda of SmallBusinessHelp.info had only the header from her website to use for her fan page profile picture. I found a free photo on dreamstime.com and created a much more dramatic profile picture for her.

Start with an eye-catching image

ClassicalBalletNews had a good photo that benefited from a bit of retouching, and more dramatic cropping. I went into Photoshop and greatly adjusted the Levels. Then I went into Color Balance and added a bit of magenta. Big improvement in minutes!

Add your personal branding color

You may need to extend your photo with your business’s color to allow a clean area for type. You can either outline your photo against the color, as in the top design sample. Or, use the Gradient tool to blend the color over one edge of the photo, tying the color and the photo together. Another example of this is my graphic design Facebook page profile.

Finish with your company name or logo, your URL, and what your page is about!

Whether or not you have a Welcome tab, use the profile picture as an opportunity to tell us a bit about your business! Be sure to include your company name and URL (in the ballet design sample above, both are the same) and give us your Unique Selling Proposition, tagline, or brief info about your business. This way you’ll attract Likes from those visitors who want what you have to offer!

I’m sure these 4 steps will improve your Facebook fan page profile picture design! Try them out and post the link to your page here!
